Surface faults of the Paradox Basin were mapped to identify tectonic activity and its effect on subsurface stratigraphy. Faults mapped in the Abajo Grabens and Lockhart Basin areas Were mapped on the groundin detail, and their surface characteristics were compared with faults in the salt anticline belt and the Needles fault zone. Faults in the Abajo Grabens area and Lockhart Basin have smaller displacements than the faults in the salt anticline belt, and are expressed as shear zones 1 to 30 feet wide rather than as single faults bounding the diapiric salt anticlines. This comparison suggests that there is less structural complexity in the southwestern part of the Paradox Basin than elsewhere. Faults in the Abalo Grabens and Lockhart Basin area are commonly cemented or mineralized with calcite, but those in the Needles zone are open or alluvial-filled fractures, suggesting a difference in ground-water movement or age of formation between these two structural areas.
