Arecent trend in the application of mechanical engineering principles to orthopaedic problems is toward precise documentation of joint motion. Generally, this requires a threedimensional analysis' since all articulating joints rotate to some extent in three planes. Many authors, however, simplify motion by assuming it to be planar. In joints which have a dominant primary rotation, such as the knee, elbow and digits, this is a reasonable first step toward understanding their kinematics. Other cases for studying planar motion are those in which the joint is constrained externally. Often, an objective is to observe the response of the joint to an applied load, thereby documenting its force-deflection characteristics in a specific plane. Although not a generalised approach, two-dimensional analysis is a popular and useful technique when studying skeletal biomechanics. Measurement of planar joint movement frequently relies on the concept of instantaneous centre of rotation (ICR). The ICR is described as the coincident point on two bodies which has the same velocity. One may envisage this centre as the point about which one body is instantaneously rotating with respect to the other (HARTENBERG and DENAVIT, 1964). To estimate an ICR, the method of Reuleaux may be used as shown in Fig. 1. A and B represent two'target'points on
