1961, May 23; Murmaris M,= 6.3, I,= VII*. An earthquake with an offshore epicentre caused widespread damage in the island of Rhodes and the opposite coast of Turkey where hundreds of houses were destroyed. Long-period effects were noticed at considerable distances from the epicentre, with the disruption of springs of water and damage to tall structures founded on alluvium. The shock was felt as far as Crete, mainland Greece and Cairo.
