The genealogical relationships of photoreceptor cells within the compound eye of Drosophila were studied using cell labeling, with either 3H-thymidine or recessive mutations, during the 3rd larval stage. Photoreceptor and secondary pigment cells arose from different precursor cells. Under these experimental conditions, precursors of receptor cells gave rise to .apprx. 8 elements which differentiated as R cells of 2 different groups. Of the cells 1 differentiated as R7 and the remaining as any 1 of R1-R6. The last cells behaved initially as equivalent, and could differentiate within the same or within different, but neighboring ommatidia. The R1-R6 cell class in which each element differentiated, seemed to depend on the time of its origin. The implications of these findings for the formation of the ommatidial pattern are discussed.
