Rational, or more specifically, reduction in, antibiotic use is a long-standing theme in veterinary medicine, including small animal practice. These have included setting stringent antibiotic-usage targets for different agricultural sectors, increased monitoring and benchmarking, a full ban on the use of any new antibacterial drug in animals and a restriction of the use of highest priority critically important antibiotics in food animals; sales of antibiotics decreased by > 50% and the occurrence of MDR bacteria in animals reduced (Mevius & Heederik [34]). Antibiotic stewardship confronts patient care head-on when considering the approach to sepsis; managing an overwhelming infection or optimising antibiotic use seemingly warrant contradictory approaches. Serious adverse effects are recognised with many other antibiotics and can affect specific species or breeds more severely; consideration of the adverse effect profile is an important step in antibiotic selection and will vary by patient.[Extracted from the article]
