Although clinical dementia typically occurs in late life, the pathological process in the brain begins decades earlier [1]. Hence, the current focus of investigation is to identify individuals at high risk of developing dementia before the onset of clinical symptoms [2]. At present, identification of such individuals relies often on neuro-imaging techniques and cerebrospinal fluid analysis [3]. Blood-based biomarkers (BBMs) have recently been introduced in clinical practice and hold great promise in this respect [4]. Because of its wide availability, electroencephalogram (EEG) is also a promising tool for potentially identifying those at risk. Whereas EEG changes in established mild cognitive impairment (MCI)/dementia are well documented [5], only one study described EEG changes during sleep that predate development of adjudicated MCI/dementia in cognitively normal individuals [6]. That study found no difference in conventional sleep metrics between those who did and did not develop
