Objective: To survey the incidence of pterygium among middle-aged and elderly aborigines of the Tao tribe of Orchid Island, Taiwan. Materials and Methods: Inhabitants aged 40 years and above were examined with a slit-lamp at random selection. Results: A total of 249 participants were enrolled into this survey, including 101 men and 148 women. Their ages ranged from 40 to 87 years. The mean age of the total population was 58.54 years (standard deviation, SD±12.95); 60.09 years in the men (SD±12.99) and 57.49 years in the women (SD±12.86). Of the population surveyed, the total prevalence rate of pterygium was 53.01% (132/249) (95%CI: 39.18%-66.84%), which increased with age. There was a total of 257 pterygia among the 132 patients. The average number of pterygia per person was 1.03(257/249) and this increased with age; varying from 0.79 (126/160) among the middle- aged group (40 to 64 years old) to 1.47 (131/89) in the elderly group (65 years old and above). There was no significant difference between genders. Pterygium occurred with predominance on the nasal side of the ocular surface. Conclusions: The high prevalence of pterygium (53.01%) among the middle-aged and elderly population of the Tao tribe in Orchid Island may be related to the latitude, ultraviolet exposure and lifestyle.
