In this paper I want to discuss a recent paper by Shozo Izumi [I1] which solved an old problem, that of characterizing analytically irreducible local domains (i. e., local domains whose completion is a domain) in a way which does not involve the idea of completion. I shall go a little beyond the original paper, which was concerned with local analytic algebras, and therefore was restricted to local rings containing a field, but the modifications needed to cover the general case are minor, and the paper contained all the essentials of the solution.
