We examine the impact of residential and workplace location and mode of transportation to work on the incomes of female and male workers. We first review the literature on transportation to work and local labor markets with the goal of integrating aspects of the behavioral and structural approaches. We then present the results of our analysis of household survey data collected in suburban Toronto in 1983. Using the concepts of choice and captive transit users, we conduct a genderfocused analysis comparing transit riders with automobile users regarding journeyto- work distance and income characteristics. To understand the concept of captive labor markets we develop a typology of labor markets based upon distance to work and income. The results support prior research showing that women work closer to home and earn less than men, but type of transit user has different implications for each sex.
