Objective: Accelerated atherosclerosis occurs with a high frequency in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We evaluated the association between CKD and thoracic aortic plaques using transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Methods: This study population consisted of 297 patients who underwent TEE. Aortic plaques were evaluated in the proximal thoracic aorta (PTA) (from the ascending aorta to the aortic arch) and the distal thoracic aorta (DTA) (the descending aorta) using TEE. Aortic plaques were defined as complex plaques of >= 4 mm thickness and with ulceration or mobile components. CKD was defined as the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)
