We have studied the effect of the coupling region on the linear transmission characteristics of two types of photonic crystal ring resonator (PCRR) with a triangular lattice of air holes using reduced refractive-index coupling and three-waveguide coupling structures. The cavity mode in PCRRs working in the linear region of dispersion curves is preferable to obtain sharp resonance, which can establish traveling-wave behavior and realize one-directional dropping. In addition, we investigate the dependence of optical bistability on initial frequency detuning and input intensity. Unstable oscillations take place when detuning is large.
