The heritability of variations in the number of vertebrae in the pig was investigated at the pig-breeding station of the Agric. College of Norway from 1933 to 1941 All young pigs were X-rayed. The breeding animals were selected for a high number of vertebrae in order to get longer pigs. A total of 4,928 pigs were examined. The number of vertebrae from head to Os sacrum varied from 27 to 30. The variation was to a high degree heritable (74%). The regression was strictly linear. The number of factors is not known. With increasing number of ribs the number of lumbar vertebrae decreased. The regression of offspring on sires was 0.492 and of offspring on dams 0.479. This high regression value combines the effect of one of the parents and part of that of the other, as the correlation between the parents was 0.301. The regression of offspring on the avg. of parents elimin ated most of this duplication.
