In this paper, we show that the etale fundamental group of a punctured projective line (with canonical exterior action of the absolute Galois group of the base field) determines the relative positions of the deleted points on the line, provided that the base field is finitely generated over ®, the rationals. By a punctured projective line over a field /c, we mean the projective line over k with finitely many /c-rational points effectively deleted.
