METHODSSelection of populations. There are two types of populations of interest: traditional and modern. Among traditional ones, clearly the choice should be populations that have little, or no, recent admixture. For American natives this may limit the choice considerably. If the admixture is ancient, it can be neglected; at some level, all populations have had some admixture. Modern populations are probably best represented in rural areas where there is likely to be less admixture than in urban areas. Unfortunately, in collecting our Oriental samples we have been, as yet, unable to apply this rule, as will be indicated later. Storing the samples, extracting DNA, and testing the probes are so costly that procedures will have to be developed for optimal results even if the ideal sampling scheme is especially difficult to carry out in practice.
