This paper describes fundamental investigations for an ultrasound catheter using laser-induced breakdown (LIB). Laser energy was transmitted through an optical fiber and lenses and focused to generate LIB in a water bath. In order to reduce laser energy for LIB generation, heavy water (D2O) was used to fill in the water bath instead of H2O. In the experiments, the ultrasound signal generated from LIB was detected with a needle hydrophone. After amplification and digitization, the signal was transferred to a personal computer (PC) and then off-line filtered. The filtered signal shows that the ultrasound signals have several peaks. The first peak is the signal directly detected with the hydrophone, while the rest of the peaks are those reflected at the water front or bath walls, indicating that the ultrasound has low directivity. We concluded that the proposed catheter is feasible for obtaining the frontal image of a blood vessel.
