All these substances were prepared and purdied in the Chemistry Department, Birmingham University, under the direction of Professor Stacey and Professor Tatlow. The experimental work was carried out by Miss H. Maxwell, Mr J. Roylance and Mr T. W. Rimmington. Details of the structures and boiling points of the compounds are given in the table forming the main body of this report. It is suggested that none of the compounds is sufficiently promising as an anresthetic to justify further investigation at this time. They were inert, flammable, or had immediate toxic effects. It is felt, however, that the results-although negative-are important, since several interesting facts emerged during these investigations. Pentafluorobenzene and hexafluorotetrahydropyran (hexafluoroepoxyhexane) were anmthetics devoid of obvious toxic symptoms. Monomethoxyheptafluorocyclopentene 1, H: 2, H-hexafluorocyclobutane and 1, H: 3, H-octafluorocyclopentane had anathetic properties, but also various undesirable features. Perfluoromethylcyclohexane, perfluorodimethylcyclohexane and perfluorobromobenzene were substantially inert. The rest of the compounds showed varying degrees of toxicity. All the compounds except No. 40, which was not tested, because of shortage of sample, could be made to burn in oxygen and some in air. The following substances reacted with soda lime: decafluorocyclohexene; 1, H: 3, H-octafluorocyclopentane; and 1, H: 2, H-hexafluorocyclobutane.
