Immunological relationship between syphilis, yaws and venereal spirochetosis of rabbits were detd. by use of the test for immobilizing antibodies developed by Nelson and Mayer. The immunological relationships between 4 strains of Treponema pallidum were also studied. Sera from rabbits infected with 3 strains of T. pertenue and two strains of T. cuniculi for immobilizing reactivity against the Nichols strain of T. pallidum demonstrated a significant cross-reactivity between these 3 groups of treponemes. Sera from rabbits infected with 4 strains of T. pallidum demonstrated a similar cross-reaction between all of those and the Nichols strain of T. pallidum. Conversely, there was an absence of immobilizing activity against T. pallidum, T. pertenue and T. cuniculi, of sera from rabbits immunized with Reiter, Kazan and S-26 strains of non-virulent, cultivatable spirochetes. Quantitative titrations of immobilizing antibody in sera from rabbits infected with T. pallidum T. pertenue or T. cuniculi were performed with homologous and heterologous spp. of treponemes. The results showed that, although cross-reactivity is present, a definitive antigenic difference exists between T. cuniculi on the one hand, and T. pertenue and T. pallidum on the other. Similar quantitative titrations demonstrated a high-cross reactivity between 2 strains of T. pertenue and the Nichols strain of T. pallidum. No significant differences were observed between the reciprocal homologous and heterologous immobilizing titers of 3 of 4 strains of T. pallidum: the 4th strain (St. Louis) showed a significantly higher homologous immobilizing titer and a consistently low heterologous immobilizing reactivity against all the other 3 strains. In these expts. the quantitative immobilization test was reproducible within a 2- to 3-fold range.
