Shanghai’s Xuhui District can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty. It was there that Xu Guangqi, the first Chinese scholar to translate and introduce Western mathematics into China, established a farm, pursued his scholarship, and was buried there after his death. Since Xu’s descendants continued to thrive and prosper in this district, which is located at the confluence of the Fahuajing and Zhaojiabang Rivers, it was eventually named Xuhiahui, or “the confluence 1 of Xu’s family.”
