The northern California Coast Ranges consist of at least seven tectonostratigraphic terranes. Six of these, the Pickett Peak, Yolla Bolly, Central, Yager, Coastal, and King Range are part of the Franciscan assemblage. The Elder Creek terrane is part of the Great Valley sequence. Accretion began in the east during the Nevadan orogeny and proceeded westward. Rather than a continuous process, however, it appears to have involved alternating periods of underthrusting (subduction?) and strike-slip faulting. The latest event, the eastward-directed obduction of the King Range terrane, is believed to be related to the northward passage of the Mendocino triple junction.
