In a 3-years field experiment significant differences among commercial winter rape cultivars (Brassica napus L.) were found regarding growth, seed yield, nitrogen (N) uptake, N utilisation and photosynthetic activity of leaves at low and high N supply. Seed yield under conditions of low N supply was correlated with (i) N uptake during the reproductive growth phase and (ii) photosynthetic activity of leaves at the end of flowering. No significant relationships existed between seed yield and (i) N uptake until flowering and (ii) the amount of N accumulated in the straw at maturity. Based on these results we conclude that there are less perspectives to improve N efficiency of oilseed rape by an “improved traditional ideotype” (i.e. better remobilization of N taken up before flowering) than by an “alternative ideotype” (i.e. maintenance of N uptake during the reproductive growth phase).
