As for the fuel cladding in the light-water reactor, silicon fiber reinforced silicon carbide composite (SiC/SiC composite) is expected as a potential replacement of Zircaloy due to its many superiorities, where it is necessary to develop the end-cap seal of SiC/SiC composite cladding. In this research, as one possible design, the applicability of fiber laser welding for joining between SiC/SiC composite and Zircaloy tubes was examined based on the caulking method. As the methods for fitting two tubes, two types of cutting, which were flat and screw cuttings, were conducted for the inner face of Zircaloy tube and the outer surface of SiC/SiC composite. The laser beam irradiation was circumferentially applied to the outer surface of Zircaloy tube. Regardless of types of cutting, the mechanical caulking joint of two tubes was successfully produced, but the airtightness was insufficient for the end-caps of SiC/SiC composite cladding. However, the screw cutting seems to be preferable because the screw threads of Zircaloy was melted by the laser irradiation and its shape changed so that Zircaloy adhered to SiC/SiC composite partially. Namely, it can be concluded that the circumferential laser irradiation would have a good potential for producing the caulking joint of Zircaloy and SiC/SiC composite tubes with the screw cutting.
