The subject we address is a fascinating and difficult one, besides being very pertinent to the theme of this volume. Happily, the overall task is made more feasible by appreciation of the broad scope and values of the studies presented in these proceedings and in recent studies related to it. It is quite clear that the topic of DMSO, from a broad variety of aspects, has matured markedly. It is receiving very serious attention from many qualified investigators and is now making a strong bid to take its place as a highly valued substance for clinical studies and as a trusted and approved medicinal agent for specific purposes. Questions about how DMSO exerts its biological effects obviously are of prime importance because answers to them are essential for guiding its further development. DMSO also has much to teach us about how a substance so constituted can interact with body components and exert its particular effects. New knowledge about the chemical and physical properties of DMSO'.'must go hand-in-hand with increased understanding of its biological effects and medical applications.
