SummaryPlacental lactogen (HPL) determinations were made on 6019 samples from 1428 non-smokers and 2726 samples from 682 patients who smoked throughout pregnancy. Maternal HPL levels at 3242 weeks maturity were similar in both groups. Equally low levels of HPL were observed in both smokers and non-smokers who delivered growth-retarded infants.
