With the developtllent of whole genonle sequencing, gene expression microalTay technology, and large-scale protein level Inonitoring, the nlajor post-genomic challenge is no longer data acquisition but analysis and interpretalion of large alnounts of data. The availability ofcomprehensive whole-genolnic inforrnation on DNA, RNA, and protein allows researchers to begin unravelling the intricate relationships between different interacting levels ofgenoillic information, as well as the underlying biological networks of living organisnls. COlllparisons of different genolnes have revealed that differences in phenotype cannot be sufficiently explained by the observed slnall differences in DNA coding regions. In other words, the crucial difference between organiSIns is present not silnply at the level of sequence variations between protein encoding genes, but differential regulation and expression of genes. Large-scale experilnental and COITI-putational nlethods are now available for researchers to start elucidating the control circuitry and networks of gene expression. The rnapping and understanding of these transcriptional regulatory networks are now one of the 1l1ajor challenges of the postgenoolic age.
