Response of vagal afferent fibers arising from receptors in stomach of the cat are similar to other stretch receptors in skeletal muscles and lungs. A linear relation and activity in the form of single irregular impulses or groups was observed; some were spontaneous. The pattern was not uniform. Fibers were difficult to isolate. Conduction velocity of some ranged from 6-14 m/second. Fourteen gastric stretch receptors were localized digitally in different parts of the stomach. The nor-mal function of the gastric stretch fibers may be to signal the degree of gastric distension and may constitute the peripheral mechanism for the immediate satiation of hunger and thirst.
