. Let B n be the group of braids on n strings, and let P n be the corresponding pure braid group. In this paper we consider subgroups of B n generated by powers of Dehn twists. For example, let A 12 ,A 13 ,... ,A n − 1 ,n be the standard Dehn twist generators for P n and consider subgroups of the form (cid:2) A ε ij ij (cid:3) ; we give conditions guaranteeing that such a subgroup has finite index in P n . We then consider subgroups obtained by adding in powers of other Dehn twists. In the cases considered the finite index property is characterized in terms of certain inequalities.
