Over recent years, it has become apparent that the role of development studies within the teaching of sociology, politics and social sciences in general, is experiencing a popular revival. Indeed, the growing importance of the study of societal development is reflected in its increasing prominence in the syllabi formulated by the'A'level Sociology examiners of the AEB and Cambridge boards. However, this apparently fresh faced, but rapidly maturing subdiscipline has experienced an outbreak of teething problems. Some of these difficulties can be attributed to the subject's rediscovered youth but others are traceable to deep rooted, structural faults. This is apparent both in teaching methods within social sciences throughout much of the education system and in strict and unnatural distinctions between social sciences' various and inaptly named disciplines. In as far as these problems befall both teachers and students, we intend to submit our diagnosis and proffer optimistic, but we believe necessary, remedies.
