MATERIALS AND METHODSSubjects. Twelve men, ages 18-32 yr, participated in and completed the lo-wk bicycle exercise training study. All were nonsmokers and were found free of cardiovascular disease by physical examination and by a treadmill test administered by a cardiologist. Subjects were not engaged in regular activity prior to the training program, although they participated in occasional activity such as basketball. All subjects had normal prestudy levels of plasma total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDLC, and lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC). None were diabetic; none had any chronic diseases. They took no medications, with the exception of one subject who was on Tagamet for several weeks during the training program.Trainingprogram. After determining eligibility for the program by physical examination and by cardiovascular stress test in the pretraining period, a maximum oxygen uptake test (VO, max) was performed on a bicycle ergometer (6) and body fat was calculated from body density determined by underwater weighing using the equation of Siri (30). Exercise training consisted of a supervised bicycle ergometer program with a continuous 30-min workout averaging 70% maximum heart rate (HR) reserve [resting HR plus 0.7 (maximum HR-resting HR)]. Subjects stopped exercising only for 10 s each 5 min while HR was monitored. Subjects exercised three sessions/wk for 10 wk, and work loads were increased regularly to maintain target HRs. Physical fitness and anthropometric variables were redetermined at the end of the training program.
