Reviews the book by EF Loftus and K. Ketcham (1994), The Myth of Repressed Memory: False Memories and Allegations of Sexual Abuse. The review focuses on Loftus's false-memory experiment and then on 6 broad issues facing the field: 1) choosing sides in the debate on repressed memories, 2) telling illustrative stories about other therapists, 3) proof of allegations, 4) the use and meaning of statistics in the debate, 5) suing other professionals and ligating science, and 6) practice and policy issues concerning expert testimony and resulting sentencing of jail vs treatment. Pope points out the very heightened emotions that come out in the debate and how that influences consideration of the crucial questions.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
