Exo-erythrocytic schizonts were found in slides of the liver parenchyma of a male chimpanzee (Pan satyrus verus) 9 months after it had been inoculated intravenously with salivary glands of Anopheles maculipennis infected with the Madagascar strain of P. vivax. Such a long retention of exo-erythrocytic stages may indicate that the chimpanzee might be an excellent laboratory animal for the study of the exo-erythrocytic cycle of the plasmodia of man. The finding also supports the belief that recurrence of the disease following complete disappearance of all blood forms may be due to the retention of schizonts in liver parenchyma for long periods of time in spite of anti-malarial medication. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: A.
