Normal human urine contains a highly active inhibitor of viral hemagglutination, effective against PR8, Lee, FM1, swine, mumps, Newcastle disease, and GDVII viruses, but inactive against PVM. Urine from cats, rabbits and guinea pigs also shows inhibitory activity. The inhibitor concns. are of the order of 2 mg. %. The inhibitor was isolated from human urine by means of 3 procedures: alcohol precipitation; precipitation at pH 3; and precipitation with 0.58 [image] NaCl. After further purification the material was active at 0.0001 mg./cc. It appears to be a mucoprotein. The activity of the inhibitor as it occurs in urine is inversely related to salt concn.
