Summary. Thirteen Sprague-Dawley rats were deeply anaesthetized and cavities were prepared in the upper first molar teeth. The pulps were exposed and capped with either Analar calcium hydroxide mixed with distilled water, or Analar zinc oxide mixed with eugenol. Serial sections of the teeth were stained with either haematoxylin and eosin or the Gram Weigert stain. Inflammatory infiltrates were observed in the pulps in both groups; dentine bridges were present in a approximately half the teeth in both groups, and bacteria were detected in almost all the teeth. They were confined to the superficial parts of the pulp with little evidence of penetration of vital pulp tissue. Apparently viable micro- organisms were observed in direct contact with both materials.
