The growth of a crack in a viscoelastic solid is considered within the limitations of linear continuum mechanics. Starting from the local stresses and deformation field at the tip of a crack and the first law of thermodynamics a non-linear differential equation is derived for the crack tip velocity in dependence on an arbitrary history of the crack tip stress intensity factor. Conditions for the simplification of this differential equation are discussed. The relevance of these calculations to the mechanical behavior of composite solids is pointed out.The case of cyclic loading (fatigue problem) is discussed in detail and sample calculations are given to illustrate the relative effect of maximum and minimum load during a cycle. Some experimental data is given for comparison with these calculations.
