healthy young men in good training is about 80% of the maximum oxygen uptake (Mitchell. 1958). This amount of work can be maintained in a steady state for the period of observation. which was usually four minutes. Normal male subjects were found to have a higher PWC 170 than female subjects. This difference was independent of body weight in our series. This result is in agreement with those of other workers (Adams and Linde. 1961; Rodahl et alii. 1961). In our normal population group, we found no correlation between PWC 170 and age. However. the majority of subjects were in the 15 to 25 years age group (Table II), and to draw a more valid conclusion we should study larger groups of older patients. In the normal subjects. the PWC 170 values were reproducible within a period of six to 12 months. However. the total ventilation studied at the same time was more variable. The calculation of "work" in kilocalories per minute (Snellen. 1960) possessed no advantage over the use of the treadmill speed in kilometres per hour as the PWC 170 index. Tables III to VI establish a close relationship between our clinical estimation of the patient's disability and the measurement of the PWC 170. This test enables us to evaluate quantitatively changes which may accrue from surgical or medical treatment.
