Memories are remarkably persistent, but rely on transient signaling. The prion-like properties of CPEB suggested a solution to this problem. The paper by Krüttner et al. (2012) in this issue ofNeurondemonstrates that the prion-like domain ofDrosophilaCPEB functions independently of its RNA-binding domain for memory.
