Varied instrumental response effort, ratio size, and magnitude of reinforcement in a bar-pressing situation to examine work as a determinant of performance. Ss were 54 female Sprague-Dawley rats. With the exception of small ratios the relation between rate of bar-pressing and response effort proved to be an inverted U with a maximum in the region of 35-gm bar force. Typical relations between ratio size and magnitude of reinforcement were found. No theoretically significant interaction between bar effort and ratio size and magnitude of reinforcement was found. Results suggest that the" law of least effort" and/or response-inhibition interpretations of effort are not applicable to bar-press performance and that the most likely explanation was optimal physical coupling.(15 ref.)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
