Figure 1| Preliminary stress perturbation map (calculated at 10 km depth) overlain on the Satellite Radar Topographic Mission digital elevation model of the earthquake source region. The colour scale indicates the Coulomb stress change in bars. Areas of positive stress can be considered to have an elevated aftershock probability. The stars indicate the locations of the two magnitude-6.4 earthquakes in the Ziarat district; the location of the first event (1) is the first published location for which the stress field was calculated. The location of the second event (2) is the current best estimate. The focal mechanism solutions (black-and-white ‘beach balls’) reported by USGS-NEIC are also shown. The circles show the location of settlements at risk. Inset: The regional context of the earthquakes—the star indicates the location of the area shown in the main map.
