The centro-acinar cells, intercalary duct cells, and intralobular duct cells of the exocrine pancreas exhibit marked ultrastructural similarities. All 3 types are characterized by a cytoplasm containing very little endo-plasmic reticulum, comparatively few, small mitochondria, a modest Golgi apparatus and considerable amounts of delicate fibrils. The apical cell surface has microvilli and the nucleus is round or oval with marginal indentations. Distinct deviations exist only with respect to the configuration of the apical cell surface. In the intralobular ducts this surface very often has blebs which can attain considerable dimensions. Such blebs are much smaller and fewer in the intercalary ducts and they were but occasionally observed in the centroacinar cells. Considering that the sole essential difference between the 3 cells is the progressively increasing number and size of apical blebs the authors are inclined to believe that the cells are homologous. The ultrastructure of the duct cells is discussed in relation to their possible role as provider of fluid and electrolyte content of the pancreatic juice.
