A previous paper described the fine structure of the ciliated columnar cell of human bronchial epithelium as it was observed in this laboratory. The present communication describes an unusual structure that was found in the cytoplasm of the ciliated cells in 26 of the 90 cases in which bronchial epithelium was examined. These structures appear as moderately well-defined dense bodies, usually occurring in clusters. The bodies measure approximately 700A in diameter and appear to consist of short coiled filaments about 25A thick. Because of their morphology the name filosome is proposed to designate these bodies. The function and relationship of these structures to other cell organelles is still uncertain.
