Studies of alkali-reaction of fine aggregate have so far been carried out in pure systems consisting of sand and lO molar sodium hydroxide. Although total shrinkage for sands is much less than 1 ml/lOOg it is simple to increase the" signal" by just increasing the sample size. 4 danish sands have been investigated so far, ranching from innoceous to highly reactive. Comparison to the result of the traditional methods of test gives a very promissing correlation.Hydration experiments with flyash, leaning on the chemical shrinkage method, have been performed here and at Aalborg Portlands laboratories. They use an apparatus, called a Konometer, which is now commercially available in Denmark. The Konometer measures the chemical shrinkage of 6 hydrating samples simultaneously, and produces continuous hydration curves by means of a 6-channel plotter.
