This paper analytically investigates the application of cushion stoppers to a flat-sliding structure having a non-modern sliding interface to suppress its residual sliding displacement during earthquakes. Based on a basic sliding structural model, this study builds seismic response estimation methods and a stopper design to avoid significant additional damage to superstructures. The design and estimation methods are examined using numerical simulations of flat-sliding structures having friction coefficients around 0.2 and designed stoppers. From the examinations, properly designed stoppers are found to provide the expected suppression effect without causing significant additional force to the superstructure. The estimation methods reasonably evaluate seismic responses for cases with and without stoppers. Stoppers properly designed can be placed without a gap as a best practice, although a small gap within a couple of centimeters is also acceptable in terms of the efficiency of seismic mitigation and suppression of displacement.
