Tongue Flaps and the Closing of Large Fistulas of the Hard Palate

Large postpalatoplasty fistulas of the hard palate present a difficult surgical problem. The use of tongue flaps for closure of these fistulas has been well accepted since 1966. This paper describes the authors' experience with this procedure, and with modifications of it. The procedure consists of reconstruction of the nasal lining; construction of the tongue flap; fixation of the flap to the palate; sectioning of the pedicle; and postoperative care. Thirteen patients were operated on using the procedure, and were followed closely. Results show that this method is the best way to correct the deformity.
