It is now a well established fact that changes in the physical conditions under which bacteria grow may markedly affect their activities. The effects of variations in temperature, concentrations of various ions, osmotic pressure and numerous other factors have been investigated. There is one physical force, however, which has not been adequately studied, namely, the force that arises from the mutual attraction between molecules and manifests itself as surface tension. Bacteriologists are coming more and more to the belief that an explanation of many hitherto little understood phenomena may rest on a knowledge of the action of surface forces. According to MacCallum,1 "surface tension is the most powerful and most important of all forces concerned in the life of animal and vegetable cells."
