The role of Heterochromatin Protein-1 (HP1) during mitosis has been controversial. Two recent studies inScienceandDevelopmental Cell, from Tanno et al. (2015) and Abe et al. (2016), suggest that the means of HP1 localization and its function at inner centromeres are altered in cancer cells with chromosomal instability.
