Mice were given a mixture containing equal numbers of streptomycin-sensitive (Str-) and streptomycin-resistant (Str+) variants. Although they are equally virulent the Str- varient grows more rapidly. Following death, samples of heart blood were examined. Blood from mice dying from less than one LD50 dose contained Str-, Str+, or a mixture of the two variants. The appearance of the Str+ varient alone suggests that infections were initiated by a very small number or possibly by a single organism, and therefore that the organisms were acting independently.
