It was shown that thevargenes inPlasmodium falciparum, which encode the erythrocyte membrane protein 1, appear to be particularly prone to rearrangements. It is considered probable that the subtelomeric location of many of thevargenes is in part responsible for this, and that this location favours the generation ofvargene diversity. Nucleotide sequence data have been submitted to GenBank under accession numbers AF221760-AF221829.
