Abstract Abstract. The courtship song of males within the Drosophila auraria complex is described. Each species' song is similar and consists of a 'pulse song' of bursts of pulses. Four song parameters were measured: inter-pulse interval, burst length, number of pulses per burst, and intra-pulse frequency. Inter-pulse interval was species-specific among sympatric species, but the other parameters were not. Inter-pulse interval might be used as a species-discriminator by females in the D. auraria complex. Two allopatric species had identical inter-pulse intervals. Since these two species are closely related, divergence time between them might not have been long enough to differentiate inter-pulse interval allopatrically.
