Expectations of urban travelers are increasing in the mobile and hyper-connected community of today. A seamless Internet surfing experience while travelling is expected by passengers, and as a result, Internet connectivity in underground transport infrastructure is becoming of the utmost importance. Wi-Fi has been quite popular as a channel for connectivity over the past years in about half of metro systems, and that figure is expected to grow to about three-quarters; its popularity lies in the fact that Wi-Fi can provide complimentary access to the Internet for users in a given space. Few metros charge their passengers for access to Wi-Fi, while over half apply restrictions on its use. Telecom investors drive the dominant business model for investment and installation of broadband connectivity in metro infrastructure, as relates to mobile communication coverage.
