Abstract After the deposition of the Lisan Series and the disappearance of the great Pleistocene Jordan lake, erosion in the valleys draining into the Jordan Rift Valley was followed by a phase of tufa formation by the major springs. The tufas were then eroded; and the deposition of poorly-sorted gravel and soil filled the valleys and formed fans at their mouths.Stream downcutting into these deposits resulted in a terrace. A briefer period of aggradation, followed by erosion which is still active today, formed a lower terrace.Upper Palaeolithic artefacts have been found in the upper Lisan beds and in the upper terrace. The lower terrace contains Roman potsherds. The tufas are thought to represent a wetter phase, and the succeeding terrace a period of active mechanical weathering. The lower terrace probably resulted from a slight change in the rainfall regime.
