In the preceding chapter there was an account of the transmission across the neuromuscular synapse whereby a nerve impulse generates a muscle impulse and thus a muscular contraction. In this chapter on synaptic transmission in the central nervous system, it is convenient to start with some simple concepts of the mode of action of the neuron that operates the motor unit, i.e., the motoneuron, because this study links with the classical reflex work (cf. Creed et al. 1932) and because the motoneuron has been very extensively studied by modern analytical techniques.
